SOPHIE COOPER – 'GOODBYE GEMINI'

"'GOODBYE GEMINI' is a collection of music that helped to process various events going on around me during the past few years," says SOPHIE COOPER about this fascinating set of songs.

Described by Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (hcmf//) as "a crucial member of Yorkshire’s far-reaching experimental music scene", Sophie’s practice pivots around new presentations of acoustic instrumentation – primarily the trombone – with electronics, challenging conventions around composition, text placement and performance.

"Songwriting is one of the more challenging parts of my artistic practice," she explains, "and it always takes a while to consider these types of ideas... What can the song be and how can I make it interesting? Where do voice tones and the trombone overlap? They are both extensions of my body – and guitar, ever-present and terrifying."

'Goodbye Gemini' is the second album in a trilogy – preceded by 'Our Aquarius' and to be followed by 'Wrong Kind of Libra' – and references a recurring theme in Sophie's solo albums: air signs.

This limited edition on-body-print cassette with J-card comes housed in an outer slipcase, with all exquisite artwork by Borley Rectory's Director of Visuals Luke Drozd.

"Completing 'Goodbye Gemini' meant a lot; letting go; moving on," she says. Sophie presses stop. You press (repeat) play. Say hello and wave Goodbye, Gemini. May the circle remain unbroken.

("Massive thanks to Helen Mort for supplying me with some texts and Julian Bradley for some beautiful electronic additions" – SC)
