THE LEFT OUTSIDES are Mark Nicholas and Alison Cotton, a husband and wife duo based in Walthamstow, London, whose atmospheric, hypnotic songs echo Nico's icy European folk, pastoral psychedelia and chilly English fields at dawn. Mark and Alison celebrate the power of the song. With this Borley Rectory release, we celebrate the songwriters, captured in the intimate setting of The Betsey Trotwood, Clerkenwell.
THE LEFT OUTSIDES were invited by psychedelic troubadour Robyn Hitchcock to be his opening act for a two-night stand in October 2018 at the legendary venue. 'A PLACE TO HIDE' is a soundboard recording of the first night - six songs; an exquisitely curated mix of self-penned compositions, traditional ballads and the uplifting melancholy of The 13th Floor Elevators. The instrumentation was minimal; the impact maximal.
See the candles flickering in your mind's eye. Watch the shadows play. Pull up a chair. There's nobody else in this room. It's just you. You and the musicians. Breathe deeply and listen to THE LEFT OUTSIDES. They have songs to sing and atmospheres to conjure in the twilight. It's yesternow and you have company.
'A Place To Hide' presents the listener with a chance to dream. It is presented by Borley Rectory – the fourth release on the label – in three forms: an unlimited download; standard edition CDR in card slipcase and A5 booklet; and very limited deluxe edition (splipcase CDR, A5 booklet, exclusive 'HYPNAGOGIA' cassette, sticker, vintage slide and inserts in a stickered box). There are just 100 commercially available physical copies in total.

Ghostly violas and droning harmoniums adrift in a fathomless limbo...a somber experience, but strangely comforting, like being wrapped in a warm blanket on a gray autumn afternoon. neu-mann
